Under the motto: "Growing Green Cities", international gardening and urban planning specialists in Almere on the southern Ijsselmeer are addressing the question: How can life in the city become more sustainable and livable when urbanization is constantly advancing?
Ideas on greening, nutrition, health and energization of the cities of the future can be experienced in the various national and international theme pavilions and buildings.
From April 14 to October 9, 2022, the city of Almere in the Amsterdam metropolitan region invites the world to Floriade Expo 2022. As a world exhibition, the international horticultural show is eager to positively tackle challenges of the future and present innovative ideas and solutions.
A lot of lead time is needed for this prestigious project for the Netherlands, which takes place only every 10 years, because the flora and fauna need time: an alphabetically ordered encyclopedia of trees and plants is already growing on the grounds, which visitors can discover during a visit.
Of course, no Dutch exhibition is complete without the so typical greenhouse: in the 170 meter long greenhouse, the contribution of the Dutch horticultural sector, everything goes from marveling, touching, trying and tasting. The architecture of individual pavilions tells exciting stories: For example, the Food Forum, which is over four meters high and made of various layers of clay and sand and grasses, makes it impressively clear what it means that the new, artificially created host province of Flevoland is located far below sea level - namely, just over four meters!
From the 850-meter-long cable car, visitors have a perfect view over the grounds and the nearby Almere skyline. In addition, the Floriade offers a varied art and culture program with lots of entertainment and various art installations.
By the way, in terms of sustainability: after the Floriade, the permanent structures will be used as a new green residential area for the city of Almere.
